Jul 30, 1998 - 16:26 - I have a question: Thanks for your question, Scott. The prayerbook with the most instructions and commentary in English is The Complete ArtScroll Siddur. Although the frum commentary may not be everyone's cup of tea, it is *by far* the easiest siddur to use. It includes explicit instructions for all the "body english" and seasonal variations. It uses gray shadow around paragraphs that are inserted or skipped on various occasions, to clearly highlight the beginning *and ending* of each. The English and corresponding Hebrew *always* line up. It can be ordered on-line at: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ISBN=089906650X/thelearnersminyaA/ If needed, transliterations of the prayers can be found on-line at: http://siddur.webjew.org For details of bowing and all aspects of ritual, see Hayyim Donin's book, To Pray as a Jew. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ISBN=0465086330/thelearnersminyaA/ For an in-depth orientation to the structure of the service and the significance of each of the prayers, see my book, The Synagogue Survival Kit. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ISBN=1568219679/thelearnersminyaA/ Once you are comfortable davening mincha, Jewish bookstores sell cheap credit-card-sized laminated cards with the whole Hebrew text in tiny print, for convenient carrying in your wallet. I hope this information is helpful. --- Jordan |
