Jun 8, 1997 - 21:56 - I have a question: The first significant Jewish settlement in Canada took place in 1760. Prior to that year, Jews were legally prohibited from even visiting, much less living in, Canada. The first organized Jewish communal institutions were in Montreal, which remained the largest Jewish community in Canada until very recently, when it was overtaken by Toronto. The original Canadian Jewish institutions were founded by English-speaking Jews from England and America. The largest rate of Jewish immigration took place over the thirty year period from 1881 through 1911, consisting mostly of Yiddish-speaking Jews from eastern Europe. This information is gleaned from "Jew or Juif? Jews, French Canadians, and Anglo-Canadians" by Michael Brown. |
